Canvas Art for Toddlers

Wanting to find creative fun ways to get Art pieces in your home without paying an expensive art-eest? Well all you need is a blank canvas, paint, tape, and some little toddler hands! That’s it!!

Today I was preparing and waiting for a photography client to arrive for her daughter’s One Year Smash Cake session. Because of the weather our brilliant outdoor garden plans were thrown out the door. So the next best option was to set up my studio in my overstocked garage. And by overstocked I mean overstocked with my husband’s gazillion boxes of LEGOS!. Neatly stacked; but they literally take up the whole left side of the garage.

I have a few backdrops and lighting (controlled by my 11yo helper; aka my daughter Keira) and s few props to work with. My location of choice for any photography client is outdoor. It gives me better lighting, landscape and working room. However in Rhode Island in the summer you never know when it will rain. Cue in the last few days with severe lightning and thunderstorms. Gross!

So to pass the time of waiting on the clients who are fighting people in traffic who have never seen rain before; I decided to pass the time by cooking Salmon and giving my very energetic 3yo son, Ethan, something to do. Keira came up with her favorite art project; canvas art with tape.

She has become very creative with this process and has pretty much made it her own signature design. Today it was a large “E” for Ethan.

For this project you will need:

Tape
Blank canvas (any color)
Acrylic Paints
Packing Tape 2″ width works well
Brush to paint with – or just use fingers and hands

Plan out your design on the canvas – we like stripes or initials or shapes. If you want smaller width for the design you can cut your tape into smaller strips.

Place your tape on the canvas and once your design looks how you want it then drop some paint all over your canvas. Try to stick to one light color and one dark color. If you use too many colors you will end up with a poopy color. And nobody wants “poop” art hanging on your wall.

Have your child spread the paint to cover the entire canvas and dont worry about avoiding the taped areas. Once the project looks good you can let it dry overnight. Then removing the tape will reveal your clean design underneath.

If you don’t like how plain your design is underneath the tape you can add some small pictures of your little one in those areas to really give it a personal touch.

Enjoy making your art!

Now for the Salmon I mentioned earlier.

Doesn’t that look amazing? Well it was even better than it looks! I will post another blog about how I made this delicious meal. Stay Tuned!
