I finally found the best Authentic Mexican Restaurant out East! WHAT??

All of my stars in the universe have aligned! There is a higher power…. there are such things as UNICORNS and Flying Pigs! Hallelujah….

To understand the struggle I have had leaving the west coast in 2007 and not finding any food establishments close enough to the west coast Hispanic food obsession I had… let me just say, STRUGGLE is an understatement. Being a military spouse we move A LOT, and I never know where home will be next; what I do know is once we find out where we are going I look around online to see where we will live, but also where we will EAT!

In 2012 we moved really far east and the first person I talked to I asked them where there is a good Mexican Restaurant place around here and they said, “TACO BELL”. I literally waited in silence for their LAUGH to follow and then they would hopefully say, “Nah, just kidding…..” but, NOPE! They were dead serious… From this point on I knew I was doomed!

I am no professional FOODIE, but I know good rice, beans, Huevos Rancheros, and Chimichangas when I eat them. Not to mention the Sopapillas and the FLAN, and the spicy Margarita with those chunky spicy real (NOT PICKLED) jalapenos I love!

Anyways…. (I’m still full from yesterday, but my mouth is already watering over what I will be saying next)

Hubby and I had a morning off with no kids and we had planned lots of grocery shopping. After the first stop we just weren’t feeling the next task of battling the crowds at Walmart, so he asked if I wanted to try the new Mexican Restaurant he has been hearing about from the guys at work. My first thought usually when he suggests a place is; How many YELP reviews do they have, let me see pictures, what does the building look like and in this case, is it really AUTHENTIC Mexican Food?

He will eat anywhere at least once, but I am a little more apprehensive and will scope a place out before I attempt it (YES, judge the book by it’s cover – only when it comes to food). And when I do attempt a place, I usually pick the safest thing on the menu.

So we agreed to go try it out together without the kids so I didn’t have to worry about quality yet….

SERIOUSLY – GUERRERO MAYA in South Portland, Maine – I LOVE YOU!

We walked in and we were greeted by the sweetest ladies that reminded my of my son’s grandma and great grandma! Then sat down and browsed the menu… It all looked great but how would it taste.

Here is what I ordered: (FYI the lunch menu was the way to go with a large appetite!)

** TABLE GUACAMOLE: RECOMMENDED!! Tell them how you want it and they grind it all up in a bowl with LOVE. The Avocados are FRESH AND LARGE! The serving is plenty for 4! but there was only 2 of us and we killed it.
** I ordered a Spicy Jalapeno Margarita (not on the menu) – Oh my… this was one of the best I have had! FYI order the small if you usually order a Large! Their LARGE is a FISHBOWL!
** I ordered a Steak Fajita dish which came with a side of rice and beans (Oh my word RICE AND BEANS WERE YUMMMMMY-LICIOUS)!
** Hubby ordered the Carne Asada Burrito – It was the size of my forearm and he killed it!
** For Dessert…. yup I still had room… I got the Adelita: Flan with Sopapillas and two scoops of ice cream (chocolate and vanilla)

My waitress was Stephanie and she was super sweet and caught on very quick that I like things SPICY! She actually offered to add grilled whole Jalapenos on the side for my fajitas and I was blown away by the presentation as well as the taste!

Do I usually write in my blog about FOOD, Nope… But this was worth a mention so if you are ever in Maine or live here go visit them! GUERRERO MAYA is AMAZING!

I think I may be going there regularly because the cravings have not stopped since I left!
